where we will have demonstrations on pruning and planting and answer all your questions
on getting your garden ready for the season and winning a prize at the June Rose Show.

Our guest speaker will be Suzanne Horn, past president of the Pacific Rose Society
and head of the Horticultural Exhibitors Committee.
She will give a remote talk on Miniature and Miniflora Roses.

Along with the installation of the new president and slate of officers,
we will hear the annual President's and Treasurer's Reports, and the recipient of the RIRS President's Award will be revealed.

Information regarding Rose Fest and our June in-person Rose Show will be available, as well as signup sheets for those events.

The Rapture of Miniature & Miniflora Roses

Suzanne will present a colorful PowerPoint presentation featur- ing hundreds of beautiful photos entitled

“The Rapture of Miniature & Miniflora Roses”.

This program will highlight the wide variety of these tiny treasures, their history, how to use them in your garden and how to take them to the rose shows.

She will also feature a segment in the program devoted to recent and new introductions,

including a comprehensive look at the celebrated Dave Bang Collection of miniatures and mini- floras.

For those who have not met Suzanne, has served as Vice President in charge of Programs for Pacific Rose Society for many years and is a Past President

She is also an avid rose lover, exhibitor and educator from Glendale, California with a background in entertainment.

Suzanne has been growing roses since February 14, 2000, all in containers, and miniature roses became her first love when she was given one on Valentine’s Day that year.

Since then, she has become a highly-successful exhibitor, winning District and National trophies since her first two years of exhibiting.

In 2003 she became a Consulting Rosarian and shortly thereafter an accredited ARS Horticultural Judge.

In 2014, Suzanne became a Master Rosarian and was named Outstanding Consulting Rosarian for the Pacific Southwest District.

Suzanne has also acted as a Judge's Chair for San Fernando Rose Society, was named to the Board of the American Rose Exhibitors Society (ARES), and is a past President of the Pacific Rose Society.

She served for a number of years on the ARS Exhibitor's Committee and is currently the head of the ARS Horticultural Exhibitors Committee.

Suzanne has taught at four District Consulting Rosarian Seminars, three Judging Schools, at the Tenarky District’s prestigious Midwinter Conference, ….etc (rest was cut off in the newsletter)

Our February meeting will feature a video/powerpoint on Polyanthas by the late Bob Martin, past President of the American Rose Society.

Polyanthas are not a well known type of rose and this presentation may well inspire you to add some to your garden.

Many of us have one or two roses in our gardens that are not common, out of commerce, found roses

or otherwise interesting or unusual varieties. Share your photos and thoughts on these roses with the Society.

We return to a VIRTUAL MEETING this month with special guest speaker Gaye Hammond from Houston, Texas.

Gaye is an international lecturer and past president of the Houston Rose Society.

Her PowerPoint Program, “Oh #!&# I DID IT TO MYSELF (and how to fix it if you did),"
shines a light on gardener-caused rose maladies related to spraying, watering, temperature, nutrition and pets
and offers solutions on how to solve these problems. This program is eligible for one Consulting Rosarian Credit.

Our business meeting will include announcing the slate of officers for 2022 and Rose Show information such as Sponsor Sign-Ups

COME join us - IN PERSON - for a morning of fun with other Rose Lovers.

There will also be a trial of combining virtual and in person meetings,
so that, members unable to attend will be able to enjoy some of the meeting.
We are inviting Rose Society Crafters to come talk, demonstrate, show their crafts.
We have a number of very interesting crafts signed up already - bring yours.
Please respond to Lynne's email to let her know what you will be bringing so that she can ensure that we have time for all.
We will be trying a "holiday treat swap" at this meeting. Members are invited to bring individual size bags
of their favorite holiday treats (with recipe) to swap with other members.
We won't be enjoying snacks in the library, but this should be fun.
This is your chance to pick up and pay for your calendars, otherwise contact Patsy for pick up.
Get your calendars in time for Christmas gifts.
It will be so good to see everyone again at the end of the year - looking forward to seeing everyone.

DETAILS: Greetings all,At the moment, we are a "Go" for our first in-person meeting at the Aspray Boat House in Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI, on Saturday, August 14th.

We hope all attendees will have been vaccinated, or wear a mask indoors. I am vaccinated but will have my mask with me anyway..

We have a tentative agenda as follows -

12:00 - 1:30 - Potluck lunch, set-up indoors and served by "The Masked Servers"
1:30 - 2:00 - Brief meeting and updates, outdoors (fingers crossed)
2:00 - 3:00 - Rose Show Gift Distribution, outdoors (fingers crossed)
3:00 - 4:00 - Social Hour and Desserts on the outdoor Back Patio (no alcohol however, sorry, rules)

This schedule would allow folks to attend for all or part or the meeting, depending upon their comfort level with being out and about. The Boat House is quite airy and the back doors open up onto a bricked patio that sits along Pawtuxet Cove. We will have extra masks and hand sanitizer on-site. If you're think of coming, could you drop us a quick note, so we know how many chairs and tables to set up ? Diane, Chuck, Patsy, and the Rose Show Committee created a wonderful opportunity for members to show off their beauties on-line and all entries will be shown.
Winners will be announced at this meeting and members will also be able to vote on the People’s Choice Award for the most Elegant Enchanting Rose, Arrangement, & Rose Garden Surprise at this time.
Beautiful prizes have been chosen specifically for the Classes featured, so join us to see if you’ve won!

Please join us for our May meeting, where we will review classes and requirements for our Virtual Rose Show.

This year, we will be accepting photograph entries through June 19th, submitted to Patsy Cunningham. Learn how to prepare your digital files to put your best foot forward.

We will then dive into companion planting! This year in lieu of Rose Fest, learn about blue flowering plants as we take a look at how to add them to your rose garden: Montine Ross will present Into the Blues, about bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs to consider, and Rachelle Desrochers will present I Got The Native Plant Blues, incorporating blue and violet native flowers into your garden. Blue flowers are not as hard to come by as we think! .

Spring forward into an exciting new season that brings forth refreshing changes for the growth of our gardens.

What is the first thing we do in the spring? We prune! To help us achieve the best rose garden ever, our program of experts include: Mike and Angie Chute, who will present PowerPoint presentations on Pruning and Planting Bare Root Roses, Irwin and Cindy Ehrenreich, will show a video to demonstrate correct pruning practices.

Members are invited to send before and after photos of pruning examples from their gardens. Please send your photos to Nancy Gaiewski by April 7.

Gail will present a PowerPoint program on Small Garden Design which will focus on basic garden principles applied to small spaces while maximizing your garden enjoyment. Gail will also discuss changes made to the Blithewold Rose Garden.

In addition, we will introduce our 2021-2022 Officers, have our Annual President and Treasurer Reports and present our 2020 President Award. Information about our upcoming Virtual Rose Show will also be announced

It's time for the RI Rose Society's November Zoom meeting. This month's meeting will feature a live presentation and two videos. Frank Karikas will reprise his ever-popular Tool Time with Frank, sharing his tips on garden tool selection and care. We will see instructive videos by Paul Raymond on rooting rose cuttings, and Mike and Angie Chute on preparing climbers for the winter. Members will have the opportunity to ask questions after each presentation. If time permits we will have a Consulting Rosarian Q&A to discuss the impact of this past summer and fall on our roses and winter preparation. As usual, we will have the opportunity to ask rose care questions of our society's Consulting Rosarians.   Following the success of our first Virtual Meeting we are going to follow it up with a VIRTUAL GARDEN PARTY.  Members are invited to show and discuss their favorite roses of the growing season. Roses can be shown alone, in sprays, arrangements, bouquets, or, whatever works.  They can be shown however you can get them on screen - whatever works with your computer expertise - this is just going to be a fun meeting.  This has been a fantastic growing season so we should be treated to a wonderful display of ROSES - this is what we are all about.  To take part in this unique event, email Nancy Gaiewski and express your interest.  Nancy will reply with everything you need to join the meeting.  For even greater incentive, we will have a wonderful "door prize".  Some lucky member will win a wonderful gift basket put together by Lynne Harrington - what more could you ask for??  Come join your fellow rose lovers and enjoy their wonderful roses.  The drive is very short - dress is optional and snacks are up to you - couldn't be easier.

The hotel is the Hampton Inn Fall River/Westport which is across the parking lot from the conference center. Shuttle service will be available for those who need it

The block is reserved until 1 month before the convention ie February 27. The price includes hot and cold breakfast self serve  in hotel breakfast room. There is a pool and exercise room.








RIRS ANNUAL MEETING - come join us for another wonderful meeting.  We will have the introduction of OFFICERS for the year, our TREASURER'S REPORT, and a talk by our incoming PRESIDENT.  We will have additional information on our upcoming events: Yankee District Convention (hosted by RIRS); Rose Fest in May; and, of course our June Rose Show.  We will have sign-up sheets to support all of these events.  You will also be able to pick up any RIRS logo clothing you have ordered.  PLUS - WE HAVE A WONDERFUL SPEAKER - Gail Read - Horticulturist and Gardens and Greenhouse Manager at Blithewold in Bristol, RI.  She will speak on "Small Garden Design" and also talk on changes planned for the Blithewold Rose Garden.  Many of us are familiar with this wonderful facility - a great opportunity for all to become familiar with it.  Should be a great talk. Time to Enjoy! Come & celebrate the end of a successful rose gardening year at our Annual Holiday Meeting which features a glorious Holiday Arrangement Demonstration by Elissa Della Piana and hand crafted Arts and Crafts by members. The 2020 June Rose Show Theme will be announced with sign-up sheets to support the event. Information about the Yankee District Conference will be presented. Also learn about an Arrangement Seminar to be held in January. Plan to pick up your 2020 Calendar. Take a sneak peak at the RIRS clothing that can be ordered at the January and February meetings.



The RIRS will hold its regular monthly meeting Saturday, November 9, from 10am to 12:30pm. The meeting will take place at Anchor Bay, 1440 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence, RI.


This month's meeting will feature Society members Frank Karikas, Montine Ross, and Clive Nickerson speaking on the topics of SOIL, COMPANION PLANTS, and SPROUTING ROSES FROM SEED, respectively. They will of course be ready to answer questions any of us may have on these fascinating topics.


Now that Fall is here and it's time to put our rose gardens to bed, the meeting will wrap up with a discussion led by our Consulting Rosarians on Lessons Learned and Closing the Garden.

Our annual Photo Contest is a favorite. The rules are the same as always. Each membership/family can submit up to 6 photos of roses, rose related activities or rose gardens, including creative photos. Your photos should be printed in 8x10 or 8-1/2 x 11” format. You should write the name of the rose or scene and your name lightly on the back of the photo. Everyone will vote for their 12 favorite photos. The 12 photos with the most votes will be featured full size on our 2020 calendar. The first place winner will win a calendar and will have their photo on the home page of our website for a year.

We could use a few tables for this venue. Email the list-serv if you can bring one.
No food/snacks in this library meeting

While the votes are being tallied, there will be a raffle. Consider bringing a donation of a garden related item, clean potted plant, vases, wine or ?

Following the meeting, please come to Chelos for a brief discussion of how you can be a part of a successful Convention in March.
